The HumBug Project

in English by Nir Simionovich of Greenfield Technologies Ltd at AMOOCON 2010

Abstract

Telephony based fraud is currently estimated at a yearly leakage of over 30B$ per year – with a steady increase every year. Carriers are well equipped to handle and detect fraudulent phone calls and credit attacks, however, the end consumer is always left handling the ball when his PBX system is attacked or compromised.

The HumBug project provides a community oriented approach to Fraud Detection. By providing a highly simplistic API for reporting call and call attempts to the HumBug analysis engine, the project aims to provide near real-time call analytics and later-no, provide a tool for analyzing and detection fraudulent phone calls and telephony attacks on CPE.

The project is still in pre-alpha stage, however, is now accepting new registrants for the call analytics network and for the initial fraud detection engine.
